Artisans dAngkor Siem Reap
Cambodia is so rich in traditions and cultures, and it would be a waste to not appreciate its crafts and artworks. I was fortunate enough to be able to get a glimpse of the skillful, centuries-old techniques used in stone carving, wood carving, lacquering, gilding and silk processing at Artisans Angkor, one of Cambodias finest showcase of the Khmer workmanship.
Acute attention is given to each workpiece, right down to the most minute detail
Artisans Angkor was initially created to provide jobs to young Cambodians living in rural villages. These young artisans then undergo training with the Chantiers-Ecoles de Formation Professionnelle, which objective is to revive traditional craft skills. Today, Artisans Angkor has expanded rapidly and own 42 workshops across Siem Reap, providing employment to over 1,300 people.
These high quality carvings make good souvenirs too
Friendly chaps
It was so exciting to see how a block of marble was transformed into a beautiful piece of art
Tools and dusts everywhere!
My favorite part of the entire tour:
Elephant carvings
I am such a big fan of elephant carvings, and I always end up buying one whenever I see them. (Also partly because I believe that it is my spiritual animal). Hence it was a really insightful experience for me to be able to see the process of making these hand carved elephants:
Leave it to the artistic and patient Cambodians to create exceptional craftworks from raw materials.
Artisans dAngkor makes a great stop if you have some extra time in Siem Reap. It is located just 10 minutes away from Pub Street and Old Market.
